Petr Cech set for a month out due to a calf injury

Arsenal’s hopes of climbing back into the top four have taken another blow with Petr Cech now set to miss a month due to injury.

The goalkeeper was an early substitute for the Gunners in a 3-1 defeat to West Brom last Saturday night, immediately looking in discomfort after passing the ball out from the 18-yard box.

Scans done after the match confirmed that Cech had suffered a calf injury, adding further headaches for the already under pressure Arsene Wenger.

The announcement will see the Premier League winner miss a vital fixture against fellow top four hopefuls Manchester City after the international break, plus meetings with West Ham, Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.

Back-up gloveman David Ospina has failed to impress and has seen less than an hour of domestic game time so far this season, and is also reportedly looking for a move away from the Emirates.

Fellow Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez was also conspicuously substituted with an ankle complaint in the latter stages of the match against Tony Pulis’ side.

“His ankle is in an absolutely terrible state. He should not have played in the second half but he insisted that he wanted to come out,” said Wenger of the Chilean.

The Gunners sit six points outside of the top four and are only above seventh placed Everton on goal difference.
