Aaron Ramsey claims he meant Panenka penalty

Aaron Ramsey has opened up on his Panenka penalty in Wales's 1-1 draw with Serbia, claiming that he fully meant it but was unaware of the significance.
The Arsenal midfielder cheekily dinked the ball to Vladimir Stojkovic's left, waiting for the opposition keeper to make his move before successfully converting from the spot.
To make the spot-kick finish all the more special, it came at the Rajko Mitic Stadium - the same ground that Antonin Panenka first pulled off the pen to win Czechoslovakia the 1976 European Championship.
Ramsey was accused of miscuing his kick slightly, but speaking after the match on Sunday night he told reporters: "I didn't know that, but that is quite a nice touch. I felt calm, I felt confident in the situation. The keeper asked for the ball so I gave him the ball and he said, 'I'm going to stay in the middle, you're going to go down the middle.' So I went in the right hand corner. Thankfully it went in.
"That's my first one but I felt I knew that's what I was going to do before stepping up and taking it. I'm just happy it went in. That is the risk you take. You know, I am out there to enjoy myself as well, and though it was a big occasion, a big moment in this qualification campaign, I felt calm and comfortable doing it."
Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic struck 17 minutes from time to level things up in Belgrade, leaving Wales four points adrift of their opponents in the Group D standings.

Arsenal players owe themselves a performance states Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has claimed that the Arsenal players owe it to themselves to put in a performance at Liverpool after a disappointing last few weeks.

At the end of January and going into February, the Gunners suffered successive Premier League defeats at the hands of Watford and Chelsea respectively.

Although they managed to claim a 2-0 win over Hull City, they were also routed 5-1 at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, a result which prompted many fans to turn against Wenger.

Arsenal have won just three of their last 23 away games against the other sides making up the top six of the table, but with the Reds also struggling of late, Wenger senses an opportunity for his side to improve that record at Anfield. He told Sky Sports News:

"They owe themselves a performance. They are quality players and I think on the day at Bayern it all went against us because we were

1-1 at half time and in the second half everything went against us.

"We responded at Sutton, that was quite a tricky game and we want to respond again.

It is even more important because we have not done well recently in these kind of games.

"For us, this kind of game like Liverpool is of course an opportunity that we want to take. We have to go and take it and not wait for the result."

Arsenal, boosted by a return to fitness for both Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey, are currently 13 points adrift of leaders Chelsea having played a game fewer.

Aaron Ramsey & Laurent Koscielny return to Arsenal training

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny have returned to full training ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Ramsey has been sidelined since the home defeat to Watford at the end of January due to a calf injury, while Koscielny was forced to sit out the FA Cup victory over Sutton United last month.

However, both players are expected to be available for selection when the Gunners travel to Anfield this weekend, although Wenger did also confirm that Mohamed Elneny faces a spell on the sidelines.

"We have Aaron Ramsey back in the squad. He's back in full training. Laurent Koscielny, who we lost at Bayern Munich, is back in full training as well," he told reporters.

"Elneny has an ankle problem that should be sorted out in three weeks. He got injured at Sutton and will not be available for Saturday's game."

Arsenal currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, one point clear of Liverpool with a game in hand.

Aaron Ramsey still believes Arsenal have a chance of winning Premier League title

Aaron Ramsey remains optimistic that the club can still win the Premier League title, despite being 13 points off the pace.

Chelsea are currently leading the way with a 10-point advantage over the rest of the pack, and even though the Gunners have a game in hand, it will be a tough ask for them to close the gap.

The race to finish in the top four is tight, with just five points separating second from sixth, but Ramsey believes that the main prize is still up for grabs where Arsenal are concerned.

"There's still a lot of football to be played, stranger things have happened in the game before," talkSPORT quotes Ramsey as saying.

"Chelsea have quite a gap at the moment, but it only takes a couple of games and everybody's right back in there again. Arsenal have to get back to winning ways and compete again and go on a run."

It has been 13 years since the North London outfit won the league title, and since then have won three FA Cups.
