On this day in 1887 midfielder Archie Devine was born in Lochore, Scotland. He was with Woolwich Arsenal for one season. He joined in 1913 from Bradford City and played 24 times scoring 5 goals. He left on a free at the end of the season and joined Shelbourne.
Today in 1892 Royal Arsenal played Chatham at the Invicta Ground. In a high scoring match Gavin Crawford got a hat trick, Chatham scored an own goal and another Royal Arsenal goal went unaccredited as it was scored during a melee among the players and no one knew who got the final touch. It ended with a 5-3 scoreline in favour of the Royals.
It was Gavin Crawford on target again today in 1894 in Plumstead. It didn't lead to a win though as visitors Nottingham Forest ended the victors at 1-3.
At the Manor Ground on this date in 1896 Henry Boyd scored both the goals in Woolwich Arsenal's 2-0 win over Stockton in a friendly fixture.
Today in 1897 the Woolwich Herald reported that new manager Thomas Mitchell had arrived at the club.
