Paul Merson believes the Arsenal squad aren’t living up to the club’s reputation under Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners have struggled to perform in both the Champions League and the Premier League in recent weeks.
Indeed, Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League following a humiliating 10-2 loss to Bundesliga holders Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
The Gunners’s exit means that Wenger and his players have fallen at the last-16 hurdle in the past seven seasons.
Arsenal have also lost four of their last five Premier League games to leave the north London outfit in sixth place in the table ahead of the visit of Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ about Arsenal’s under-performing team.
Merson said:
“Arsenal are a great club – but they’re not a great team.
That’s the problem. I played for 16 or 17 years but I can never remember having a contract that ran until the last season – especially at Arsenal.
“They’d keep on topping you’re contract up when you’ve got two years left. They’d never leave you in this Ozil and Sanchez position.”
The Gunners and Manchester City haven’t won the Champions League unlike their chief rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.
