On This Day In 1992 Arsenal were at Selhurst Park to play (ground-sharing) Wimbledon. Kevin Campbell, Ian Wright and Ray Parlour all scored in a 1-3 Gunner's victory.
Norwegian Pal Lydersen (Pictured) was given his debut in this match.
He only managed 16 appearances in his 3 and a half years with the club. After going back on loan to his original club IK Start on loan he re-signed for them on a permanent basis in 1995.
On This Day In 1972 A Highbury win today. Southampton were in London and Peter Marinello scored the only goal of the match for a 1-0 Arsenal win.
It was also Marinello's only goal the entire season.
On This Day In 1924 Tom Vallance was born in Stoke-on-Trent.
The son of Footballer Jimmy Vallance and brother-in-law of the great Stanley Matthews signed as an amateur in 1946.
He had only made 15 senior appearances since turning professional when he suffered a double leg fracture which consistently hampered him thereafter.
He never made another first team appearance although did try in the reserves to regain his form and performance level.
He left the club in 1953.
Earl Days
On this day in 1887 Royal Arsenal finished it's first (albeit short) season with a defeat to a team from the 2nd Rifle Brigade. They failed to score and were beaten 1-0. During this inaugural season the club won 7, drew 1 and lost 2. The club scored 36 and conceded 8.
At the Invicta Ground today in 1891 Royal Arsenal got a comfortable 5-0 win over Old Harrovians (former Harrow School pupils), in a friendly fixture. David Howat and John Russell both scored and Wood got a hat trick.
On this date in 1895 the Council of the Football Association of England handed down a punishment to Woolwich Arsenal Football Club. In a previous match at Plumstead Arsenal had been leading 1-0 when the referee awarded a penalty to opponents Burton Wanderers. The away team duly scored and it ended 1-1. Home supporters, unhappy with the official's decision later insulted and verbally abused Mr Brodie (referee) and this became physical abuse. The FA closed the Manor Ground to supporters for six weeks and banned the club from playing within six miles.
Today in 1896 Woolwich Arsenal were on the other side of the Thames river for their 18th meeting with south London rivals Millwall Athletic. A brace from Adam Haywood and a goal by Henry Boyd gave Arsenal a 1-3 victory, maintaining their record have never having lost to the Lions.
