On This Day In Arsenal's History


On This Day in 1971 a late Peter Storey penalty earned Arsenal a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup semi-final against Stoke City at Hillsborough. 

He had already scored the first so his work earned the replay in four days time.

On This Day In 1954 A Highbury win today as Cliff Holton got his name on the scoresheet and Jimmy Logie bagged a brace to make it 3-1 over Manchester United.

This match was the last of 181 appearances for left back Lionel Smith (Pictured). 

He was with the club for 15 years before moving on a free transfer to Watford at the end of this season.

Early Days
On this day in 1887 right winger James Smith was born in Preston, England. He joined Arsenal from Fulham in 1920 and stayed just over a year. He played ten matches, scored once and was gone again in 1921 when he left on a free transfer.

On this day in 1891 Royal Arsenal hosted at team from the 1st Highland Light Infantry at the Invicta Ground. Sam Mills, David Gloak and Albert Christmas made it a 3-1 win for the Royals over the military.

Woolwich Arsenal had a friendly at the Manor Ground today in 1897 and Adam Haywood's goal saw to it that the Plumstead side beat Nottingham Forest 1-0.

The trip to Burnden Park today in 1907 ended in defeat. Woolwich Arsenal failed to score and were beaten 3-0 by Bolton Wanderers.

Another defeat on this date in 1909 when Woolwich Arsenal were once again unable to find a goal and lost 1-0 to Sunderland at Roker Park. James Maxwell played in his final Arsenal match. He only played twice in his year long stay and the winger left to join Galston later in the year.
