Early Days
On this day in 1875 inside forward Adam Haywood was born in Burton-on-Trent. He signed for Woolwich Arsenal in January 1896 and made his debut against Leicester Fosse. He went on to play 91 times for the club scoring 36 goals in the league and FA Cup. He left in 1899 to transfer to Queens Park Rangers.
It was a friendly against the military today in 1889 as Royal Arsenal took on a team from the 2nd Rifle Brigade at Manor Field. Humphrey Barbour got both the goals in a 2-0 victory for the Royals.
In Division 2 today in 1894 Woolwich arsenal got their biggest league win thus far when they beat Northwich Victoria 6-0 at the Manor Ground.
David Howat and Arthur Elliott both scored while James Henderson hit two as did debutante George Jaques. Jaques joined from Rushden in this month and only played one other match (the following day), in which he also scored but he was only at the club a matter of months.
Centre forward William McNab also made his debut in the match and he too only played twice for the club. He joined in December 1893 and departed in July 1894.
When McNab left he reverted back to his amateur status to join Royal Ordnance Factories FC which had been set up in 1893 for the Woolwich Arsenal factory workers after Woolwich Arsenal FC had turned professional to join the league
