Scores of police officers were forced to hold back rowdy football fans as crowds descended on the spurs stadium for the historic game, which saw Spurs secure a 2-0 victory and guarantee a higher Premier League finish than their neighbours for the first time since 1995.
As rival supporters arrived at the stadium, which Spurs will vacate at the the end of the season as building continues on their new 61,000 capacity base, police tried to keep the fanbases separate to avoid ugly scenes erupting.
Pictures showed lines of police vans stationed outside the Tottenham ground, with riot officers clad in protective gear and mounted police manning the roads.
In heated exchanges, flares were set off – filling the packed north London roads with smoke.
A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman told the Standard that six people were detained for a variety of offences, including public order and possession of a flare.
“Officers dealt with some disorder outside the ground prior to the game and the matter was swiftly dealt with," she said. “An appropriate and proportionate policing plan was in place.”
The match marked the final time the two teams - and their historic rivalry - would meet at White Hart Lane. Tottenham's final home game at the stadium, which they have called home for 118 years, will take place against Manchester United on Sunday May 14.
Spurs have confirmed they will stage their home games at Wembley next season but hope to move into their new ground - a project expected to cost £80million - ahead of the 2018-19 campaign
